31 July 2017: Passchendaele Memorial Event

Park Green, Macclesfield

Monday 31st July 2017, commencing at 7.10am (please arrive by 7am).

Organised by the Royal British Legion.

To commemorate the start of the Battle of Passchendaele (also known as the 3rd Battle of Ypres) on 31st July 1917, four rockets will be detonated in quick succession at 7.10am to represent the detonation of 19 mines at 3.10am at Messines Ridge on 7th June 1917. This massive explosion was heard as far away as London and Dublin, and was the prelude to the Battle of Passchendaele.

After the detonation of the rockets, the Mayor of Macclesfield will place the town’s wreath upon the War Memorial; all will be welcome to lay their own tributes should they wish to. This will be followed by a short service and a background reading of the Third Battle Of Ypres.

A list of local men who lost their lives during the Battle of Paschendaele can be found here.
