Macclesfield Reflects and Cheshire Villages Great War Society member Harry Carlisle has produced a 133 page A4 illustrated softback book, They Responded to the Call of Duty, giving a background to the names listed on the Macclesfield Park Green World War II war memorial, and an addendum which gives information about casualties with a local connection who are not named on the memorial.
One name on the Park Green war memorial remains unidentified: Norman Leonard. A man named Norman Leonard has been found living with his wife Nellie at 42 King Street, Macclesfield in 1939, but he is thought to have survived the war. Either there was another local man with the same name who lost his life, or the name was added to the war memorial in error. Any help with this mystery would be greatly appreciated.
The book costs £8 and may be purchased at future Macclesfield Reflects or Cheshire Villages Great War Society events, the Macclesfield Town Hall Visitor Information Centre, or directly from Harry, who lives in Rainow, near Macclesfield.
