Killed in action 19th September 1918 in Palestine, aged 29



Ernest Oldfield was born in Macclesfield in 1888, the son of Sarah Ann  (nee Gregory) and Joseph Oldfield, a cotton weaver. In 1891, two-year-old Ernest was living at 46 Fence Street, Hurdsfield with his parents and siblings Walter (14), Joseph (12), Harry (10), John (8) and Elizabeth A (6).

By 1901 the family had moved the short distance to 35 Fence Street and Ernest, aged 12, was employed as a cotton weaver. Ten years later in 1911, Ernest was living at the same address, lodging with his brother Harry, his wife Elizabeth and their two sons, Harold and James.

On 6 December 1913, Ernest married Edith Lomas at the Trinity Wesleyan Methodist Church, Macclesfield. In 1918 Ernest was registered on the Macclesfield Absent Voter’s List at 232 Crompton Road, Macclesfield.



Ernest first joined the 19th London Regiment with service number 6314, and was later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps with service number 120361. He was killed in action on 19 September 1918.



Private Ernest Oldfield is buried at Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel, in grave ref. R. 73. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for Private Ernest Oldfield, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.

In Macclesfield, Private Ernest Oldfield is commemorated on the Park Green, Town Hall and Trinity Wesleyan Methodist Church war memorials and the Salvation Army roll of honour.
