Died of wounds 17th July 1917 in France, aged 25

 

EARLY LIFE

Son of Henry Moses and Martha Welch, of 106 Buxton Rd, Macclesfield, Cheshire. Born at Macclesfield.

COMMEMORATION

Private Joseph Welch is buried in Grave Ref XXII. M. 11A of the Etaples Military Cemetery, France. His father asked for the following words to be engraved on his headstone: HE FOUGHT AND DIED THAT HIS KITH AND KIN MIGHT LIVE IN PEACE
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for Private Joseph Welch, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.

In Macclesfield, Private Joseph Welch is commemorated on the Park Green, Town Hall and St Michael’s Church war memorials.
