WW1 SERVICE

James Clegg enlisted in March 1915.

His death was reported in the Macclesfield Advertiser on 24 August 1917:

PRIVATE J CLEGG – Mrs Clegg, of 90 Crompton Road, Macclesfield, has been informed that he son, Private James Clegg, died from heat stroke whilst serving in Mesopotamia on July 16th. He was 35 years of age and enlisted in March 1915. He was first drafted out to India, and was transferred to Mesopotamia about twelve months ago.

 

COMMEMORATION

Private James Clegg is buried in grave ref. XX. H. 13. in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for Private James Clegg, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.

In Macclesfield, Private James Clegg is commemorated on the the Park GreenTown HallSt Michael’s Church, Christ ChurchChrist Church School and Macclesfield Sunday School war memorials.
