Died while a POW 29th June 1917 in Iraq, aged 20

 

EARLY LIFE

Son of Timothy and Alice Wood, of Rose Cottage, Lower Withington, Chelford, Cheshire. Died while a prisoner of war in Asia Minor.

COMMEMORATION

Private George Wood has no known grave and is commemorated on Panel Ref. 14 and 62 of the Basra Memorial in Iraq. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for Private George Wood, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.

Locally, Private George Wood is commemorated on the Lower Withington war memorial.
