Son of Joseph and Sarah Ann Cowley, of Macclesfield, Cheshire.

COMMEMORATION

Private Thomas Cowley is buried in grave ref. VII. E. 12 of the Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium. His father asked for the words A NOBLE BROTHER, TRUE & KIND, A BEAUTIFUL MEMORY LEFT BEHIND to be added to his headstone.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for Private Thomas Cowley, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.

In Macclesfield, Private Thomas Cowley is commemorated on the Park Green and Town Hall war memorials. He is also remembered on the family gravestone in Macclesfield Cemetery, grave ref. Z 18160:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF SARAH ANN BELOVED WIFE OF JOSEPH COWLEY OF LEVENSHULME LATE OF MACCLESFIELD WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE DECEMBER 31ST 1923 IN HER 57TH YEAR
ALSO THE ABOVE NAMED JOSEPH VERNON COWLEY WHO FELL ASLEEP MARCH 5TH 1943 IN HIS 75TH YEAR
ALSO TOM SON OF THE ABOVE KILLED IN BELGIUM JUNE 3RD 1917 AGED 24 YEARS….
