Walter Holehouse, Private 2080, 1/7th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment
Died 18th August 1915 at Gallipoli, Turkey, aged 28

 

EARLY LIFE

Son of Mrs. D. Hughes (formerly Holehouse), of Bollington; husband of Emily Ann Holehouse, of 28, Shrigley Rd., Bollington, Macclesfield.

 

WW1 SERVICE

The death of Private Holehouse was reported in the Macclesfield Times on 10 September 1915:

BOLLINGTON – Private Walter Holehouse, 5 Silver Street, is also unofficially reported as killed. Private Holehouse was 28 years of age, and married. He enlisted twelve months ago and was previously employed at the Clarence Mill. he attended the Primitive Methodist Chapel.

 

COMMEMORATION

Private Walter Holehouse is believed to be buried in Hill 10 Cemetery in Turkey, and he has a memorial stone at Grave Ref. Sp. Mem. 10. His wife asked for the inscription “A GOOD LIFE NOBLY ENDED” to be added to his memorial.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for Private Walter Holehouse, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.

Locally, Private Walter Holehouse is commemorated on the Bollington (Palmerston St) war memorial.
