Died 6th July 1915 in Belgium, aged 22

 


EARLY LIFE

Son of George R. and Elizabeth Gibbs, of “Rycott”, St. Helens Park Rd., Hastings. Educated at Pencarwick, Exmouth, Macclesfield Grammar School, Shrewsbury School, and Pembroke College, Cambridge.

COMMEMORATION

2nd Lt. Bernard Gibbs is buried in grave ref. I. D. 8. of Talana Farm Cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium. At the request of his father, a cross and the following inscription were added to his headstone:

“I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning”

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for 2nd Lt. Bernard Gibbs, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.

In Macclesfield, 2nd Lt. Bernard Gibbs is commemorated on the King’s School war memorial.

Elsewhere, he is commemorated on the Shrewsbury SchoolPembroke College Cambridge, Ashford-in-the-Water and Ashbourne St Oswald’s Church war memorials.
